Also, can anyone identify the last car’s PTS color (the red/purple one) ?
From left to right, I think they’re: Guards Red, RS Orange, Speed Yellow, RS Green, Aqua Blue, and Ruby Star (not sure on that last one, it looks darker/redder than Ruby).

People get so mad at rainbows. Bunch of dum dums, if you ask me. Rainbows are great!
There’s a town adjacent to the one where I live that has rainbow cross walks. It’s so great and happy! Rainbows everywhere! You can’t help but smile.
Jerks.

There is a mean sounding 964 that runs around Park City in that same magenta- ish color. I think the driver is some kinda c-list celeb based on how quick he got seated and served lunch the other day. My wife asked who he was.

Porsche has the right to post whatever promotional shots are important to them, and 95% of viewers will just ignore it if they don’t like it.
That said, it doesn’t pass the basic “double standard test,” plus so much LGBTQ marketing just feels like pandering to me, but that’s just a mild opinion. I’m not the target market, so I’m just projecting.
I’m more interested in the mustachioed guy who helped found Porsche and his attitude towards gays. It wasn’t pretty. But Cancel Culture apparently has a Statute of Limitations and/or a Grandfather Clause of some kind. People still buy Henry Ford’s cars, too...

Not sure on that. Seem like a lot of people are finding out that once the current resources have been used, the “cancellers” have no issues going back 30-40 years more more material.

It sounds like you’re upset about wanting to cancel homophobia. I also see reason in choosing to avoid a company based on what they do now, not what their dead and decades removed founder did, especially if you buy in to the ‘not responsible for my ancestors’ thing.

Depending on who you listen to, we are respon sible for our ancestors. Well, unless our ancestors were Confederate generals, then it’s ok. Or maybe it’s not.
The one thing lacking from a lot of the discussion is cultural norms and zeitgest. Basically “context.”
My grandmother saying “I don’t trust that one Jewish tailor, what’s his name? ” in 1940s New York is definitely bigoted, but reflects her upbringing in a world of rampant, casual anti-Semitism.
If someone said that today, it’s far, far worse. I’m just saying things need to be understood in the context of when they were said, in what culture, and who said them. The difficult part is when people alive TODAY spanned multiple cultural norms. I called things “gay” in the 80s as a kid, and I had no idea what homosexuality was. The two were completely unique, but I now realize how bad that was. Saying it today (unironically) would be pretty terrible.

No one is more of a snowflake than someone who is so insecure about what other, consenting, adults are doing in the bedroom. Who cares? Let people live their lives.

FWIW regarding your “double standard test” a lot of marketing is heteronormative. They have videos of couples lovingly spinning around, doesn’ t hurt to show a gay guy every once in a while.

Not dissing gay people, but I am a tiny bit frustrated that they took the rainbow and made it their thing. I liked rainbows. But now if I have anything rainbow-colored, people assume I’m gay. It’s just a tab annoying. Rainbows don’t have sexuality, it’s just light refracted in rain!!!!

Absolutely true! I was more referring to if we put hetero up on a specific pedestal and made an ad overtly praising it (that would read like pure homophobia/reactionary) . Obviously you can’t compare the two exactly , but critics will do just that, so it’s often better to take a more subtle approach.
The ad doesn’t bother me...in fact, those are some of the best colors Porsche ever had. Their launch ad in the US showed the designers looking at M&Ms and other sources of inspiration. Wish I could post it, but Kinja has killed copy/paste for me completely. Just an error message.

This is the whole problem with social media in a nutshell. I wish Porsche would just put out their photo, aimed at their intended audience, without the ability for people to say anything at all. We don’t need anybody’s opinion. T he fact that it’s social media means that people are compelled to say whatever they want, and to do so anonymously. The greatest thing about the Internet is that it lets everybody have a voice. The worst thing about the Internet is that it lets everybody have a voice. People need to learn to keep their mouth shut.
“ Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” Proverbs 17:28

Advertising is pandering.
Rainbows-pandering to LGBT people.
Bikini clad women/6 pack shirtless men- pandering to straight people.
I don’t understand why this upsets people (people in general, not you necessarily ).

My grandmother saying “I don’t trust that one Jewish tailor, what’s his name?” in 1940s New York is definitely bigoted, but reflects her upbringing in a world of rampant, casual anti-Semitism.
Context is everything. If s he happens to use a different tailor now who is ALSO Jewish, or if she deals with Jewish people for any other services she might need where there are alternatives available, I would find it a stretch to call that anti-semetism . Rather it would seem to me to be a way she’s trying to identify/describe someone she can’t remember the name of who she feels wronged her in the past . However if there’s a larger track record there, like going out of her way to avoid Jewish services in general, that’s a conversation I’m willing to be part of. And yet, at this point, leave Grandma alone and try not to bring up the subject. She’s a product of her time and at this point you won’t be changing anything. Focus on making sure the grandkids know what it wrong with what she says.
These days it feels like so often the context is left on the cutting room floor, and it really doesn’t do anyone any good. Yelling doesn’t change minds, it mostly just makes people retreat into their own bubble, and it DEFINITELY doesn’t change minds when the publicly-available context is ignored because it doesn’t fit the pattern you want to see.

She still avoids her Jewish neighbors in the assisted living home. And to a lesser degree, the Poles, Italians, Cubans, and just about anyone else she can place in a box to support her anti-social tendencies.
That era strikes me as the purest form of “Otherism” for lack of a better term. You had your homogeneous social group and they were the best. Everyone else was not just different, but lesser. People can say what they want about Jim Crow and other forms of overt oppression, but the stuff wandering around just below the surface all around America for many decades was pretty awful.

This is pretty much my opinion with some extra details following . I don’t care what they post. If it makes someone feel better about themselves, and promote a good cause, who am I to neg it? Perhaps it’s my straight arse on the outside looking in, but these things always seem like pandering . But a mong the things to be triggered or upset by, this shouldn’t even be on the rational scale, there’s far worse . Not to say this upsets you, it shouldn’t upset anyone, frankly .
It’s a nice pic though.

Please tell me this isn’t aimed at lgbtq+ because the cars are actually colors and not black, white and grey.. I guess I don’t see how this photo is targeted at a particluar audience in that manner, other than that it does seem to target young white men presumably with money, which I suppose is a part of Porsches target demographic.
I would think if they were trying to make an inclusive PC statement they’d have included at least one non-caucasian..

I was more referring to if we put hetero up on a specific pedestal and made an ad overtly praising it (that would read like pure homophobia/reactionary).
But isn’t that what the example above, and every other damn ad with a husband surprising a wife with a car for Christmas essentially doing? To us heteros its so damn regular that we don’t even necessarily view it as anything out of the ordinary. Do the same with a gay or lesbian couple and I promise you those same assholes will be commenting on the ad with the exact same BS.
You’re right, this isn’t even on the radar of things to be bothered by.
Also this is lining up with the whole “All lives matter!” situation. There’s a reason hetero couples aren’t celebrated by random companies in the same way - they aren’t a population that has been excluded and shunned by society, and corporate marketing, for all of history until about right now when we’re finally starting to move away from it.

To the guy that said sexual preferences are to be discussed in the bedroom; that sounds like a way to be disappointed or surprised. I’d highly recommend confirming sexual preference long before you end up in the bed room with someone.
But the takeaway for me is all of these people live in complete denial of the real world and should be shunned or ignored.

Ugh. Instagram: “We’re not as bad as Twitter, but damn it we’re trying!”
It’s cute when people with deplorable opinions apparently believe they are anonymous. Maybe the only thing worse than being on the wrong side of history is having your name attached to it, and your sad opinions shared with those you may know.
I also love seeing people who may identify as being on the so-called right snark about “cancel culture” - when the ideal is probably the best example of a free market at work. Take a stupid stance, and buyers can vote with their wallet. Freedom. But it offends those who might toss their Dixie Chicks CDs or smash their Yeti cooler, so somehow it is to be mocked. Oh, conservatives.
I’d wager few of those crying on Instagram (something something doth protest too much, methinks...) above have the means to buy any of those cars, and to those that do, I am sure Porsche doesn’t give two shits - someone else will take their place in line i f they have the stones act on their whine.
![]() 07/31/2020 at 12:41 |

As someone in that group (who also happens to generally despise marketing/advertising), it tends to be conflicting to some degree . On one hand, representation and visibility in a “normal” part of society is absolutely a good thing. On the other, it usually comes across as low-effort virtue signaling in something that is still ultimately focused on brand/product promotion more often than not. IMO, if a brand can’t bring up a social issue and let it take the lead without making it about themselves, then it’s really hard to see it as more than pandering. It’s better than nothing, but little more than it.
Best I can tell from the associated
press release
Porsche just parked these cars outside their own museum during an LGBT event and took the opportunity to toot their own LGBT-friendly internal HR policy horn, so that’s a solid meh/10 from my end.

Thing is, (hear me out), I’m a Christian. We generally don’t believe that you can be a gender you weren’t born as. However, that does not mean I hate gay people. Not at all. I’ve met several and they’re very nice people. I don’t have to agree with someone’s beliefs to love them and accept them as a person.
Also, in the context of that autobody class, most of the people I’m talking about were wannabe thug types who would pick on you mercilessly for being gay. Not fun people to be around. THAT was why it was annoying.
